Augustus “Gus” M. Wilson was born on February 8, 1845, in Tennessee, and just a few years later, in 1849, he moved with his parents and six siblings to Collin County, Texas. The Wilson family settled in the Ash Grove community, six miles north of McKinney, where they built a modest log home. Gus inherited this family farm and added his own touches, expanding the house and investing profits from his crops into land, stocks, bonds, and railroads. Despite amassing considerable wealth, Gus lived humbly, dressing like the hardworking farmer he always considered himself to be. His simple, rugged lifestyle and self-reliant nature made him an enigmatic figure in Collin County…
