COLLIN COUNTY HISTORY
The Peters Colony was a group of businessmen from Kentucky and England that contracted with the Republic of Texas in 1841 to bring 600 families to settle on the frontier of north central Texas within a period of 3 years. Heads of families would receive 640 acres and single men 320 acres. Claims could be filed until 1852 on any unappropriated land in the Colony.
When the initial grant of land proved to be inadequate additional territory was granted to the Colony. The expansion in June of 1842 would envelope the western half of the future Collin County. (The area shaded in tan on the map, below) There were already some existing land surveys in that area. Property disputes and legal issues delayed the immigrants from receiving a patent to their claims until the mid 1850's.
The final expansion of the Colony Grant in 1843 extended west 164 miles and south 100 miles from the eastern boundary but the majority of settlement was in Cooke, Grayson, Denton, Collin, Tarrant and Dallas counties. (Source: MC Toyer)
